Capitalization How well is the student using capitals at the beginning of a sentence?	Beginning Does not capitalize the first word in a sentence. Requires full verbal prompt to do so.	Emerging Does not capitalize the first word in a sentence. Requires an indirect cue "what do we do to the first letter in a sentence?"	Developing Capitalizes the first word in his sentence occasionally.	Mastered Capitalizes the first word in his sentence most of the time.
Spacing How well is the student spacing his letters and/or words?	Beginning Many errors in spacing. Requires maximum prompting to use correct word/letter spacing.	Emerging Some errors in spacing. Requires some prompting to use correct word/letter spacing.	Developing Few errors using spacing correctly. Requires little to no prompting to use correct word/letter spacing.	Mastered Uses proper spacing most of the time independently.
Letter Formation How well is the student forming his letters correctly?	Beginning Many errors in letter formation. Requires maximum prompting to form letters correctly.
