The Lead

Level 1

The lead, or attention grabber, is completely absent. The speech does not use any particular lead technique to get the reader/listener interested.
Level 2

The speech does not begin with a strong lead. A lead that was discussed in class was implemented, but it was not used very well.
Level 3

The speech begins with a solid lead. It effectively uses one of the types of leads that we learned in class. It is interesting.
Level 4

The speech begins with a strong, clear lead or attention grabber. It uses a personal experience or story, a surprising fact or statistic, a contrast, a question, a problem, a shocking or interesting fact to begin the essay. This effectively pulls the reader into the piece and makes him/her want to read more.
Introduction

Level 1

The speech is missing an introduction and does not explain what the student will be talking about.
Level 2

There is an introduction but the student does not fully explain what the speech will be about.
Level 3

The speech beginse with a relatively clear introduction. It is evident what the student will be talking about.
Level 4

The speech begins with a strong, clear introduction. It is completely clear what the speech is about and what points will be made.
Body

Level 1

It is difficult to understand what the speech is about. Transitions words are not used with any regularity. Many points need to be developed more.
Level 2

The speech becomes unfocused at times. Transitions words are not used regularly. Some points made needed to developed more.
Level 3

The speech is generally focused and follows the topic stated in the introduction. Most of the time, transitions words are used. Points are usually reinforced with stories, experience, information, and / or humour.
Level 4

The speech is focused and follows the main idea stated in the introduction. Transition words are used flawlessly. Stories, experiences, information, and / or humour is used effectively to reinforce points made.
Conclusion

Level 1

Conclusion does not contain a concluding statement and/or does not wrap up the topic.
Level 2

Conclusion contains a concluding statement and wraps up the topic.
Level 3

Conclusion contains a concluding statement and wraps up the topic in a new and interesting way.
Level 4

The conclusion is strong. It leaves the reader with a lasting impression. It reminds the reader about the highlights of the speech.
Spelling / Conventions

Level 1

Speech contains a lot of grammatical errors that negatively affect or weaken the meaning of the writing.
Level 2

Speech contains grammatical errors that sometimes affect content and hurt the quality of the writing.
Level 3

Speech contains minimal grammatical errors that do not affect the content.
Level 4

Speech contains few or no grammatical errors. Sentence structure and the writers's grasp on grammar enhance the quality of the speech.
Organization

Level 1

The speech is poorly organized to the point that the writer's meaning is unclear. Evidence of the five separate paragraphs is missing.
Level 2

The speech is organized but could be improved. Five separate paragraphs are evident, but transitional words/phrases are missing, and the writer's thoughts are not completely cohesive.
Level 3

The writer's speech is organized and needs little improvement. There is evidence of five separate paragraphs, and some transitional words/phrases are present.
Level 4

The speech is extremely organized, and all five paragraphs are solid. Transitional words and phrases are evident in every (or almost every) paragraph.
