Class Discussion How well the student participates in daily discussion.
	Needs Improvement Student is not taking steps to meet relevant standards for graduation or future study. 0 pts	Average Student may be meeting part of the relevant standard, but needs to work harder/focus more to increase achievement. 1 pts	Strong Student meets relevant standards and is actively preparing for future study. 2 pts
Textual Support Student's use of text to support claims in discussion	Needs Improvement Student cannot give textual support for discussion point.	Average Student gives general textual idea, but cannot locate/identify passage for support	Strong Student gives passage, page number, and thorough explanation of the text's significance.
Explanation Student's ability to explain their answers to critical reading questions.	Needs Improvement Student cannot answer questions about the topic.	Average Student has general idea, but misses deeper meaning or key details.	Strong Student demonstrates full and specific knowledge of question and often uses literary language in their response (themes, imagery, symbolism, motifs, etc...)
Active learner status Student takes an active role in their own education.	Needs Improvement Student is inattentive; his/her book is closed; student is not taking notes or correcting own responses. Student never volunteers to share knowledge with class.	Average Student is attentive but may have his/her book closed; may not be recording key information. Student occasionally volunteers to share knowledge with class.
