Poetry Structure Rubric
	Excellent 10 pts	Strong 8 pts	Adequate 6 pts	Needs Work 2 pts
Exposition	Excellent Student demonstrates complete knowledge of the setting, characters, or conflict. Student demonstrates complete understanding of all parts in the exposition and can justify his/her answers.	Strong Student demonstrates knowledge of the setting, characters, or conflict. Student demonstrates adequate understanding of most parts in the exposition and/or does not provide ample justification for one or more element.	Adequate Student demonstrates knowledge of only part of the setting, characters, or conflict. Student demonstrates partial understanding of the exposition with partial justification for most elements.	Needs Work Student does not include setting, characters, or conflict in their plot structure. Student does not demonstrate an understanding of the exposition with missing or little justification.
Conflict	Excellent Student demonstrates complete knowledge of the internal and/or external conflict(s) and can justify his/her answers.	Strong Student demonstrates knowledge of the internal and/or external conflict(s).Student demonstrates adequate understanding of most of the conflicts in the poem.	Adequate Student demonstrates knowledge of only part of the of the internal and/or external conflict(s). Student demonstrates partial understanding of the internal or external conflict(s).	Needs Work Student demonstrates minimal knowledge of the internal and/or external conflict(s). Student does not demonstrate an understanding the internal or external conflict(s).
Initial incident	Excellent Student demonstrates complete knowledge of the event taking place that is a necessary part of the poem.	Strong Student demonstrates knowledge of the event taking place that is a necessary part of the poem. Student demonstrates adequate understanding of the initial incident.	Adequate Student demonstrates knowledge of only part of the event taking place that is a necessary part of the poem. Student demonstrates partial understanding of the initial incident.	Needs Work Student demonstrates minimal evidence of the event taking place that is a necessary part of the poem. Student does not demonstrate an understanding the initial incident.
