Civil Disobedience Persuasive Essay Students will complete a persuasive essay arguing for or against a school rule. Rubric Code: MX59A95 By dcmcdowell Ready to use Public Rubric Subject: English Type: Writing Grade Levels: 9-12

Paragraph Criteria
	Poor 5 pts	Fair 7 pts	Good 10 pts
Explains rule/policy & opinion	Poor Student does not clearly state a policy as just or unjust OR no thesis statement--just launches into argument.	Fair Student does not thoroughly explain rule/policy and opinion OR states opinion using a form of "I".	Good Rule/policy clearly defined and explained and opinion easily understood without use of "I".
Is persuasive with support	Poor Student does not explain with specific reasons and/or examples. Seems to just be whining instead of explaining opinion.	Fair Argument is present but may be flawed due to not enough information for examples or only one example utilized. Incomplete thought or argument.	Good Is able to argue using specific examples and wording for support.
Includes own ex. + Civ. Disobed.	Poor Argument limited to only his/her own example without reference to Civil Disobedience OR only uses Civil Disobedience and no other example.	Fair Student argument is vague OR reference to Civil Disobedience does not really correlate with the argument or reasoning.	Good Student successfully incorporates own example with reference to Civil Disobedience. Both examples help to create an effective persuasion.
Counter Argument included	Poor Student does not include the counter argument for contrast.	Fair Student references the counter argument but does not do so clearly enough OR does not state clearly that what is being used is the counter argument.	Good Counter argument is clearly stated and presented well as the other side.
Grammar + Correct Citation	Poor Citation not included and paper has more than four grammar errors including use of first or second person (form of "I" or "you"), capitalization, spelling, & sentence structure.	Fair Citation is included but is not done correctly. Paper has 2-3 grammar errors including use of first or second person (form of "I" or "you"), capitalization, spelling, & sentence structure.	Good Citation is included in its correct format. Paper has 0-1 grammar error(s) including use of first or second person (form of "I" or "you"), capitalization, spelling, & sentence structure.
