Introduction 20 %	Poor Introduction is awkward or vague, and thesis is not discernible.	Average Introduction does not give enough information about the topic, but the thesis is discernible.	Above Average Introduction is engaging, and thesis statement is appropriate for the topic.	Distinguished Well-developed introduction with a clear thesis statement that introduces the topic and is engaging to readers.
Body Paragraphs 30 %	Poor Contains logical errors; points are not fully developed or supported.	Average Presents some valid points but support may be lacking.	Above Average Presents valid points supported with logic; Develops and supports each point with examples and details.	Distinguished Presents several valid points, backed by distinguished logic; Each point is well developed, explained and supported.
Organization 20 %	Poor Organization is not apparent.	Average Organization is somewhat apparent but could be improved.	Above Average Essay is organized into easily recognizable elements: Introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.	Distinguished Essay is organized into easily recognizable elements with transitions to separate each point.
Tone and Style 10 %	Poor No attempt is made to understand the audience. Tone is elementary and/or inconsistent.	Average The writing is clear, but sentences lack variety. The tone is inconsistent, and word choice could be improved.	Above Average The writing is clear, and the sentences have varied structure. There is consistent tone, and word choice is mostly appropriate.	Distinguished The writing is skillful and coherent. Sentences are expressive with varied structure. Word choice creates imagery throughout the essay.
Mechanics 10 %	Poor Displays a lack of proofreading and attention to detail. While the essay might be readable, contains numerous errors.
