Story lacks creativity in character, setting, or confict choice. Story may be missing one of those elements entirely. Story has resolution but no denouement, or vice versa. Author has purpose that is unclear or too broad. Shows a little balance in complexity.
Distinguished

Story is creative, set in a real-life location, with authentic characters. The story has a well developed conflict with a distinct resolution and denouement. Story has a clear purpose/ moral/ or lesson. Author has an appropriate balance of complex and simple thoughts, and vocabulary.
Audience

Novice

Author has no connection to his/her audience. Book is not engaging or age appropriate.
Apprentice

Author has not considered the needs of the audience. The book occasionally connects to the 4th graders' lives, is not entirely age appropriate, and only partially engages the students.
Proficient

Author has partially considered the needs of the audience. Book mostly connects to the 4th graders' lives, is nearly age appropriate, and partially engages the students.
Distinguished

Author has fully considered the needs of the audience, making sure that the book connects to the 4th graders' lives, is age appropriate, and fully engages the students.
Structure

Novice

Children's book lacks any type of structure.
Apprentice

Author has neither employed unique layout nor a variety of sentences but not both. Author rarely has a balance of complex and simple thoughts and ideas.
Proficient

Author has either employed unique layout or a variety of sentences but not both. Author lacks balance of complex and simple thoughts and ideas.
Distinguished

Author has employed a unique layout. He/she also uses a variety of sentences. Author has an appropriate balance of complex and simple thoughts and ideas.
