Topic sentence	Excellent Well-developed with a topic and controlling idea. It is a clear statement of the paragraph's content.	Good Fairly well-developed and gives some clarity of the of the paragraph's content.	Fair The topic sentence gives little evidence of a relevant topic connecting to the other sentences in the paragraph.	Needs Attention The topic sentence is unclear, or there is no topic sentence at all.
Supporting details	Excellent Each detail supports, or tells more about the topic and has follow up sentences which provide additional support.	Good Each detail supports the main idea, but there are not enough supporting details.	Fair Some of the details support the main idea, but there are some that do not.	Needs Attention The details do not support the main idea.
Organization/Structure	Excellent The supporting sentences are in a clear, organized order.	Good Most of the details are in a clear, organized order.	Fair The details are in a somewhat clear, organized order.	Needs Attention There is no clear order. Writing is confusing and hard to follow.
Mechanics	Excellent There are 1-2 punctuation, spelling or grammatical errors.	Good There are 3-4 punctuation, spelling or grammatical errors.	Fair There are 5-6 punctuation, spelling or grammatical errors.	Needs Attention There are 7 or more punctuation, spelling or grammatical errors.
Concluding sentence	Excellent It does an excellent job of restating the topic sentence and tieing the details together or summarizing the main points stated in the body.	Good It restates the topic sentence, but it does not tie the details together, or it does not summarize the main points stated in the body.	Fair There is an attempt at a concluding sentence, but it is incomplete.	Needs Attention There is no concluding sentence. Paragraph just ends without summing up or restating the topic sentence or tieing the details together.
