News Writing Rubric
	Good Did all of what is required and went beyond what is expected. 10 pts	Fair Did most of what is required. 8 pts	Poor Did not do what is required. 6 pts
Introduction--Lead Must include the 5Ws and H of a story. The lead is inviting, states the main topic and hooks the reader to continue on.	Good Addresses the 5Ws and H of the story. Lead is only one sentence and it hooks the reader to continue on.	Fair Addresses at least 4 of the 5Ws and H of the story with a lead that attempts to hook the reader to continue on.	Poor There is no clear introduction of the main topic or structure of the paper--no lead. Missing 4 or more of the 5 W’s and H.
Direct Quotes Must be their own paragraph. Always use said. At least two sources are quoted. Uses correct punctuation.	Good Quotes are in their own paragraphs. Always uses said. Punctuation marks are inside of quotation marks. At least two sources are quoted.	Fair Most quotes are in their own paragraphs. Mostly uses said. Punctuation is mostly inside quotation marks. At least one source is included.	Poor There are no quotes. Doesn't always use said. Punctuation marks are outside of quotation marks.
Accuracy Information must be correct.	Good Information is accuracte	Fair Information is mostly accurate	Poor Information is filled with inaccuracies.
Fair/Balanced Must not include the reporter's opinion. Must present the facts of the story and show all sides of the story.	Good Reporter's opinion is not included and he/she presents all sides of the story.	Fair Reporter's opinion is limited and attempts to show all sides of the story.	Poor Reporter includes his/her opinion. Does not show all sides of the story.
Grammar & Spelling (Conventions) Contains no errors in grammar or spelling that distracts the reader from the content. The story is neatly written or typed and follows teacher's instructions.	Good Makes no errors in grammar or spelling that distracts the reader from the content. The story is neatly written or typed and follows teacher's instructions.	Fair The composition is readable, follows most of the teacher's instructions, and has 3-4 errors in grammar or spelling that distract the reader from the content.	Poor The composition is illegible, does not follow teacher's instructions, and has more than 4 errors in grammar or spelling that distracts the reader from the content.
