Introductory Paragraph
Level 4
Lead-in sentence grabs reader's attention, gives clear thesis statement that will be discussed.
Level 3
Lead-in statement mildly attention grabbing, gives weak thesis statement.
Level 2
Lead-in statement is weak. Does not grab reader's attention
Level 1
Does not give thesis statement.
3 Body Paragraphs
Level 4
3 to 5 sentences per paragraph, transitions are smooth, projects student's voice, keeps reader's attention. Each paragraph gives 2 or 3 detailed supporting points made in thesis statement.
Level 3
Less than 3 sentences per paragraph. Somewhat smooth transitions. Student's voice is present to a degree. Only 2 detailed supporting points in thesis statement.
Level 2
Less than 3 sentences per paragraph. Does not keep reader's attention. Student's voice is somewhat clear. Transitions are unclear. Only 1 supporting detail is provided.
Level 1
Not enough sentences to constitute a paragraph. No transitions are used. No acceptable supporting details are provided.
Conclusion Paragraph
Level 4
Thesis is paraphrased in an interesting manner and concludes paper clearly. Vocabulary is academic. Intriguing closing statement.
Level 3
Thesis is paraphrased, but it does not clearly conclude paragraph. Uninteresting closing statement.
Level 2
No thesis, unclear conclusion of paper. Poor closing.
Level 1
Concluding paragraph is either missing or does not adequately end the essay.
Mechanics/Usage/Grammar
Level 4
Very few mechanical problems in paper, no spelling errors, little or no grammar problems, paper is formatted properly, great sentence structure.
Level 3
Some mistakes and spelling errors, confusing format, some grammar problems, fair sentence structure.
Level 2
Many spelling mistakes, needs to be edited and revised extensively, messy format, poor sentence structure.
Level 1
Far too many spelling mistakes, needs complete re-editing and revising, format was not attempted, poor sentence structure throughout.
Works Cited Page
Level 4
At least 3 Internet sites are included, using the correct formatting.
Level 3
At least 2 Internet sites are included, using the correct formatting.
Level 2
Only 1 Internet site is included, using the correct formatting.
Level 1
No Works Cited Page is included, or the formatting is totally incorrect.
