Digital Studio Photography Portrait Lighting (Photo 1)
Digital Studio Photography Portrait Lighting (Photo 2)
You will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge/techniques we have studied in class to produce portraits that feature creative lighting. You will be required to try Split lighting, Rembrandt lighting, Butterfly lighting, Broad and Short lighting in both high and low key. You will put your completed pictures into a presentation for grading, and your best three photos will be shared with the class on Halloween.

The photographic exposure is excellent, with a full range of tones and well exposed highlights and shadows. The subject's eyes are well illuminated (if allowed by costume).

The photograph's lighting style is unidentifiable with spotty light and shadow splayed over the image
Adequate
The photograph is somewhat lit in the style intended, but there is not a clear marker that the light was manipulated to purposefully achieve the desired result.
Applying
Good use of available light and light position. The lighting style (ex. Rembrandt) is easily identifiable and the portrait makes an impact for its use of light and shadow.
Excelling
Achieved the lighting technique and the desired effect when using that light set up. Portrait is dramatic and impacting due to the use of light and the correct position on your subject's face.
Creativity/ Invention
Poor
Photo does not show a creative approach to the assignment.
Adequate
Fair representation of assigned objectives; lacks originality and shows little or no evidence of trying anything unusual.
Applying
Good representation of assigned objectives. The student has explored creative solutions to the assignment.
Excelling
Image demonstrates a creative approach to the assignment; student has expanded on the basic requirements. It is clear that the student explored several choices/solutions to the assignment.
Composition (always counts)
Poor
The photograph shows little attention to composition, framing and subject matter.
Adequate
Confusing or inadequate use of composition and framing.
Applying
Attention has clearly been paid to the composition and framing as they relate to the subject.
Excelling
Subject fills up the photograph (is framed) in a pleasing/dramatic way. The photo appears to be well balanced.
Number of photographs
Poor
Students are missing more than two pictures or did not take any photographs.
Adequate
Students are missing two pictures.
Applying
Students are missing one picture.
Excelling
Photo 2 students will have a low key photo for each lighting pattern and will pick two of the five required patterns to use high key light for. (7 pictures) They will also create 1 photograph containing a unique lighting pattern of their choice (high or low key). 8 photos total.
