EQST 123.0 /124.01 directed Study 
This is a short course made available to riders by permission of the Director of Riding. Students will have the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to develop fundamental theories of hunter/jumper and dressage training.

Grooming

Unsatisfactory

Cannot identify and use grooming equipment properly.Hooves are not cleaned properly or in a safe manner. Horse is not turned out in an acceptable fashion.
Good

Student makes attempts to properly use equipment. Horse's hooves are picked properly, and coat is groomed adequately. Mane is pulled adequately, horse is trimmed and tail is clean
Excellent

Horse is turned out to show standard. Horses mane is pulled legs, whiskers, bridlepath, and ears are trimmed. Tail is clean, coat is gleaming.
First Aid

Unsatisfactory

Working towards developing the ability to recognize lameness, colic, and determine treatment for injuries. Further knowledge of medications used to treat common equine makladies (thrush, puncture wounds, tendon and ligament injuries) Poulticing and wrapping skills are satisfactory
Good

Can recognize lameness, and identify limb of origin. Understands basic first aid and treatment for injuries. Has above average skills for wrapping and poulticing, can operate GAME READY machine with supervision
Excellent

Can identify lameness and limb of origin as well as potential cause of injury. Can treat injury with appropriate medications, understands medications normally used to treat minor injuries, can use GAME READY unsupervised, has a working knowledge of horse ailments, injury and illnesses.
Body Clipping

Unsatisfactory

Student does not use clippers safely or in correct manner, Horse's coat is not prepared properly for clipping. Overall effort and result are poor and unsatisfactory
Good

Student attempts to body clip accurately. Horse is clean and prepared for body clipping. Clipping is relatively accurate, with small mistakes.
Excellent

Horse is turned out to horse show standard - legs face stomach and ears are done to professional standard
Braiding

Unsatisfactory

Student makes poor effort. Horses mane is poorly prepared.Braids are large and uneven, not uniform in size and not tight. Tail is not attempted
Good

Student has prepared mane properly, braids may not be 100%uniform, but are tight. Tail is acceptable "wispy "hairs and loose at top of dock

Tack and Equipment

Unsatisfactory

Can tack horse up with saddle and bridle needs supervision for fitting properly, can satisfactorily polo wrap, and use boots and leg protection

Can fit saddle and bridle without supervision, can use polo wraps, boots, and leg protectin as needed, has knowledge of draw reins, bungees, and side reins, and can use under supervision
Excellent

Can fit saddle and bridle, can proactively make decisions regarding bit choices, uses both draw reins and bungees in different training scenarios, has lunged in side reins and pessoa ropes
Flatwork Skills

Unsatisfactory

Working towards accurate steering. Shows consideration and knowledge of traffic patterns and ability to make horse function and respond correctly. Less than 50% diagonal and lead accuracy

Working towards riding with even rhythm and accurate steering. Incorporating bending and lateral work at a basic level Shows consideration and knowledge of traffic patterns and ability to make horse function and respond correctly. 50% diagonal and lead accuracy
Excellent

Ride on contact with even rhythm and accurate steering, correct rein and stirrup lengths, understand bending, leg yielding, turn on forehand and haunch,counter canter and lengthening in all three gaits
Jumping Skills

Unsatisfactory

Working towards developing a consistent crest release, maintaining position in the air and on landing side. Recognizing leads and executing flying or simple lead changes as directed
Good

Consistent crest release, able to maintain position consistently, execute flying and simple changes as needed, negotiate small courses with correct number of strides
Excellent

Consistent crest release and automatic release skills, rider consistently stays in balance with horses motion, coursework includes lead changes, counter canter and transitions within the course.
Course Setting

Unsatisfactory

Has an idea of course design for hunters and jumpers. Concepts of stride length, and types of jumps used for various disciplines are recognized. Can set a basic hunter and jumper courses wih supervision
Good

Understands the origins of hunters and incorporates that into courses, understands both equitation and jumpers and understands stride length and types of jumps used in jumper and equitatin format. Can set a basic hunter and jumper course without supervision

Understands the questins a course designer asks hunters, jumper, and equitation horses, has a knowledge of stride length and different types of strriding tests within a course
Stable Management

Unsatisfactory

Stalls not cleaned, water buckets not cleaned, bedding inadequate, horse not turned out in paddock daily, Student does not attend work weekend
Good

Stall adequately cleaned, buckets rinsed daily, horse turned out daily, Student makes minimal effort on the weekend
Excellent

Stall immaculate, bedding abundant, stall bars dust and cobweb free. Water buckets are free of slime and debris. Horse is turned out daily.Student is responsible and organized during work weekends
Effort

Unsatisfactory

Student displays lack of overall interest in program, horses are poorly cared for, clipping is sub average, stalls are sub average, apperance and turn out are sub average. Punctuality to lessons is lax
Good

Student makes attempts to present horse in good turn out, appearance is tidy and well kept, stalls are satisfactory, horse is clipped and mane pulled. Student is puctual and respectful to instructors
Excellent

Horse and student are turned out immaculately, horse is body clipped and clipped as to horse show standard. Rider is prepared and warmed up for lessons. Work ethic is exemplary daily
