Meets Assignment Criteria	Excellent The assignment directions are followed completely and correctly. A title is included. It is well considered, provides a hint about the contents of the essay, but does not give away too much information.	Good The assignment directions are generally well followed, although there may have been one element that has been overlooked. Title provides too little/much info..	Fair Directions are basically followed, but there is no title.	Poor The assignment failed to follow the directions given.	0 This is the wrong assignment. Nothing more will be graded.
Introduction / Conclusion	Excellent The introduction is informative and grabs the reader's attention. The conclusion makes the reader think beyond the essay. It does not restate.	Good The introduction is informative OR grabs the reader's attention. The conclusion makes the reader think beyond the essay, but DOES restate.	Fair The introduction is functional, but not very interesting or informative. The conclusion simply restates.	Poor There is an introduction, but no conclusion, or there is a conclusion but no introduction.	0 There is no introduction and no conclusion.
Organization / Development	Excellent There essay is well organized and easy to follow. There are transitions between paragraphs. All paragraphs are well developed and inclusive.	Good The essay is well organized and easy to follow, but some transitions are missing. Some paragraphs may lack full development or lack information.	Fair The essay is not well organized. The reader is missing some information. There is much repetition and / or short paragraphs throughout.	Poor The essay loses the reader in places. There is a lack of development. Paragraphs are short. there is a lot of information missing.	0 The essay is muddled and hard to follow. Most elements are not developed. There is a lot of repetition.
Writing Skills	Excellent No grammatical errors. Strong and varied sentence structure. Good understanding of vocabulary.	Good There are several grammatical errors, but no pattern of error is detected. Sentence structure and vocabulary are college level.	Fair There is at least one grammatical error that shows a pattern. Sentence structure is not varied enough. Vocabulary is unimaginative.
