Literary analysis of a favorite poem/song lyric 
The student is to write an analysis of a poem or song lyric of his/her choice identifying literary devices the poet/lyricist uses. He/She should also explain why this poem/song is meaningful to him/her. The purpose is to encourage the students to write about and listen to poetry intelligently and deliberately.

The analysis includes three to four of the elements. The student shows clear understanding of the terms and is able to apply them correctly .

The analysis includes all of the elements. The student shows clear understanding of the terms and the analysis enables the reader to have a clear understanding of the piece.

There is no reflection on why the author likes this particular piece .
Fair

The essay includes a one-sentence statement on why the author likes the piece but the author does not reflect on how the piece is meaningful aesthetically or personally.

The essay includes a reflection on how the piece is meaningful personally to the author.
Excellent

The essay includes a deep reflection on author's preference for this piece. The author comments on both the aesthetics and personal meaning of the piece.
