3-Paragraph Essay Rubric 3-Paragraph Essay Rubric Students will demonstrate their knowledge of paragraph organization by writing a 3-paragraph essay utilizing the writing process of planning, organizing, writing, evaluating and presenting the essay in relation to their reaction on the piece. 3-Paragraph Essay
	Effective Reader understands and easily follows the writer’s expression of ideas. 10 pts	Adequate Reader understands<BR> writer’s ideas. 8 pts	Marginal Reader occasionally has<BR> difficulty understanding<BR> or following the writer’s ideas. 6 pts	Below Marginal Reader has difficulty identifying or following the writer’s ideas. 4 pts	Inadequate 2 pts
Response to Prompt	Effective Presents a clearly focused topic addressing the assignment at hand.	Adequate Uses the assigned topic to establish a main idea addressing the assignment at hand.	Marginal Addresses the assigned topic, though the focus may shift addressing the assignment at hand.	Below Marginal Attempts to address assigned topic but with little or no focus.	Inadequate Does not attempt to address assigned topic.
Organization/Use of Evidence	Effective Establishes a clear and logical organization with well developed evidence. Body provides excellent support.	Adequate Uses an identifiable organizational plan that incorporates evidence. Body provides support.	Marginal Shows some evidence of an organizational plan and evidence/support.	Below Marginal Fails to organize ideas, has very little evidence and support.	Inadequate Contains no organization, ideas, evidence, or support.
Word Choice	Effective Writer uses many great vocabulary words. Exhibits varied and precise word choice.	Adequate Writer uses some nice words. Exhibits appropriate word choice.	Marginal Writer exhibits a narrow range of word choice, often including inappropriate or inapplicable selections.	Below Marginal Writer exhibits little variety of word usage, words are redundant.	Inadequate Writer exhibits weak and/or inappropriate or inapplicable words.
Spelling and Punctuation	Effective No grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors.	Adequate One to two grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors.	Marginal Three to four grammatical spelling, or punctuation errors.	Below Marginal Four to six grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors.	Inadequate More than six grammatical, spelling, or punctuational erros
Intro and Conclusion	Effective Essay has an interesting introductory statement that clearly states the focus, and an interesting conclusion that restates the main ideas.	Adequate Essay has an introductory statement that states the focus, and a conclusion that restates the main ideas.	Marginal Introductory statement is unclear or does not state the main ideas. Conclusion does not restate the main ideas.	Below Marginal Essay lacks either an introductory statement OR a conclusion.	Inadequate Essay lacks both an introductory statement and a conclusion.
