Hook	Not evident You are missing a hook.	Poor You have a hook, but it is weak or ineffective.	Fair You have written a solid hook.	Good Your hook is remarkably skilled at pulling the reader into your essay.
Background	Not evident You are missing background information.	Poor You have provided something resembling background information.	Fair You have provided a couple of sentences to summarize your topic to the reader.	Good Your background information is articulate and informative.
3 prong thesis	Not evident You are either missing a thesis, or the thesis you have is convoluted and difficult to follow. You have not attempted to use parallel structure.	Poor You have something resembling a thesis, but it is missing three prongs. It could also be a thesis that is not arguable. Your parallel structure has some issues.
