Softball Skill Assessment
Students will be assessed on specific skills for the game of softball at an introductory level, notably their application of skills and amount of effort given.

Throwing
Outstanding
- Consistently demonstrates good throwing technique.
- Can use power to throw from outfield when required.
-throws accurately to identified target most of the time.
Good
Consistently demonstrates high throwing arm, transfers weight as points opposite foot pointing towards target, follows arm through to opposite hip.
Acceptable
-Demonstrates proper body stance, raises arm at elbow, steps toward the target with the opposite foot.
Needs Improvement
-Attempts to place the throwing-arm side of body away from the target.

Batting
Outstanding
Consistently stands parallel to the plate, bat is gripped with middle knuckles lined up, dominant hand is on top, feet are staggered, knees are flexed, weight is on back leg, keeps elbow away from body, bat is held off the shoulder, eye is on ball, transfer weight from back to front, and swings level with the ground at the height of the pitch, and hits balls in the strike zone.

Demonstrates and applies proper body stance, keeps hands together when gripping the bat, swings horizontally, attempts to hold the bat off of shoulder, keeps eye on ball, and swings through the ball.
Acceptable
Demonstrates proper body stance, dominate hand is on top, keeps bat off shoulder, keeps eye on ball, and swings through the ball.
Needs Improvement
Attempts to stand with the left side of the body toward the pitcher, attempts to face the plate, and attempts to swing through the ball.
Catching
Outstanding
Consistently is in the ready position and keeps eye on the ball and align the body squarely to the ball. Pinkies together if the ball is below the waist. Thumbs together is the ball is above the waist. Use non-throwing hand to help squeeze the ball in the glove.
Good
Demonstrates and applies ready position, watches ball, gets a good jump, uses correct footwork to chase the ball down and catches the ball on the throwing side of the body.
Acceptable
Demonstrates to move into the path of the ball, sometimes uses correct footwork to chase the ball down, catches the ball.
Needs Improvement
Attempts to be in ready position, attempts to follow the ball to catch.
Base Running
Outstanding
Base runner is focused on the game, stays on base until the batter hits the ball. Runs hard to first base and on every base in the correct order, and touches every base.
Good
Stays on base until the ball is hit, the runner touches every bag, and runs hard to every base.
Acceptable
Runs to first base, tries to stay on base when the batter hits the ball, does not steal. Runs hard and purposefully toward first base.
Needs Improvement
Attempts to run to first base and may overrun it.
Game Play
Outstanding
Consistently interprets and explains softball rules. Participates actively, and with a positive attitude. Follows safety rules, and maintains good sportsmanship. Works cooperatively with their team.
Good
Interprets and explains softball rules most of the time. Participates most of the time, and with a positve attitude. Follows saftey rules, and maintains good sportsmanship. Works cooperatively with their team most of the time.
Acceptable
Interprets and explains softball rules sometimes. Participates sometimes, and with a positve attitude. Follows saftey rules, and maintains good sportsmanship. Works cooperatively with their team most of the time.
Needs Improvement
Does not interpret or explain softball rules. Rarely participates. Sometimes follows saftey rules, and sometimes maintains good sportsmanship. Sometimes works cooperatively with their team.
