Word Usage	Beginner Student’s use of vocabulary is very basic.	Developing Student’s use of vocabulary is more telling than showing.	Accomplished Student’s use of vocabulary is routine and workable.	Exemplary Student’s use of vocabulary is precise, vivid, and paints a strong clear and complete picture in the reader’s mind.
Language Conventions	Beginner May contain frequent and numerous errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation that interferes with the reader's understanding.	Developing May contain errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation that interferes with the reader's understanding.	Accomplished Has mainly grade-level appropriate spelling, grammar, and punctuation; contains some errors that do not interfere with the reader's understanding.	Exemplary Has mainly grade-level appropriate spelling, grammar, and punctuation; contains few, if any, errors that do not interfere with the reader's understanding.
Figurative Language	Beginner There is no imagery or figurative language in the poem.	Developing Imagery and figurative language is used only once in the poem OR it seems forced and doesn't fit.	Accomplished Imagery and figurative language is used in some of the poem, but does not extend throughout the poem OR it seems forced and doesn't fit all places it is used.	Exemplary Imagery and figurative language is used throughout the poem and creates a vivid visualizations for the reader.
Poetic Devices	Beginner Uses none or few poetic techniques.	Developing Uses some poetic techniques to reinforce the theme and create specific kinds of effects when read aloud.	Accomplished Uses poetic techniques to reinforce the theme and create specific kinds of effects when read aloud.	Exemplary Effectively uses poetic techniques to reinforce the theme and create precise effects when read aloud.
