Large grid

Draw accurate large grid to accept transferred artwork.

Advanced

Perfect scale is chosen to draw grid. All line-work is clear and accurately drawn to fill the entire space. No evidence that a grid was used in final work.
Meets Standards

Appropriate scale grid is used to fill the space and large grid lines are accurate. Some evidence of the use of a grid.
Improving

Appropriate scale grid is drawn to fill the space, but grid is very evident in final piece.
Needs Improvement

Grid is not drawn to scale to fill the space. Grid lines are not accurate and/or parallel resulting in an inaccurate final portrait.
Transfer of Features

Accurate transfer from small grid to large grid shows properly proportioned facial features placed accurately.

Advanced

Transferred image from small grid to large grid is exact and accurate. Finished enlargement is exact duplicate of original small image. All features are in correct proportion and are placed properly on the head. Hand size and placement is accurate.
Meets Standards

Transferred image is close to original image. Most features are in correct proportion and are placed properly on the head. Hand is well done.
Improving

Drawing is somewhat accurate but not duplicated exactly. Some facial features are not in proportion, or fingers may be unrealistic.
Needs Improvement

Transferred drawing from small grid to large grid is inaccurate. Facial features are not in proportion to the size of the head. The features are placed incorrectly on the head. Hand is incorrectly drawn.
Use of media

Graphite is used to create a strong contrast of values adding depth and interest to the final portrait.

Advanced

Graphite is used to create accurate facial tones and other details by blending a full spectrum of values. The paper is covered completely. Details are tidy and well defined with high contrast. (no outlines)
Meets Standards

Graphite is used to create facial tones and other details by blending different tones. Values may be slightly off realistic. The paper is covered completely. Details are mostly tidy and defined with no outlines.
Improving

Facial tones are patchy and not well blended. Values are minimal and may be slightly off realistic. The paper is mostly covered. Details are lacking or are poorly defined.
Needs Improvement

Very few values. Little blending has been used. The paper is not completely covered. Details are lacking or are poorly defined. Presentation is untidy.
Form and Texture

Values should create the illusion for 3D forms and graphite application (scribble vs line) should define textures.

Advanced

Choice and application of values shows an advanced knowledge of form. Texture enhances the areas being addressed.
Meets Standards

Choice and application of values shows knowledge of 3D contours. Textures are appropriate for the idea being expressed.
Improving

Choice and application of values shows some knowledge of form. Textures are however, not appropriate for the areas being addressed. (use of line instead of scribbles. Obvious smudging with finger or other)
Needs Improvement

Students needs to work on learning value and texture relationships and applying that knowledge to work.
Eraser marks/Lines

Advanced

No evidence of drawing lightly. The student did not attempt to hide pencil lines.
Meets Standards

No evidence of drawing lightly. The student attempted to erase some pencil marks, but eraser is noticeable.
Improving

Evidence of trying to draw lightly and student clearly tried to eliminate with care all pencil marks. Mostly all pencil marks are not noticeable.
Needs Improvement

Evidence of defiantly drawing lightly over all of picture plane with no evident remaining pencil marks.
Student engagement

Student uses class time well to complete the assignment.

Advanced

Student was not on task for much of the class time.
Meets Standards

Student was not on task for some of the class time.
Improving

Student was on task for most of the class time.
Needs Improvement

Student was on task for all of the class time.
