This rubric will be used to assess second grade handwriting in writing assignments and handwriting practice.

Second Grade Handwriting This rubric can be used to assess student handwriting.
	Weak 0 pts	Poor 10 pts	Fair 12 pts	Good 13 pts	Outstanding 17 pts
Number Number of letter attempts.	Weak Writes each letter less than 6 times.	Poor Writes each letter at least 6 times.	Fair Writes each letter at least 7 times.	Good Writes each letter at least 8 times.	Outstanding Writes each letter at least 9 times.
Line Usage How well are the students using their writing lines?	Weak Many errors in line usage. (More than 5 letters have errors.)	Poor Some errors in line usage. (All but 4-5 letters are written correctly.)	Fair Few errors using lines correctly (All but 2-3 letters are written correctly.)	Good Uses lines correctly most of the time (All but 1 letter is written correctly.)	Outstanding Always uses lines correctly for all 9+ letters.
Spacing How well are students spacing their letters and/or words?	Weak Many errors in spacing (More than 5 errors.)	Poor Some errors in spacing (4-5 errors.)	Fair Few errors using spacing correctly (2-3 errors)	Good Uses proper spacing most of the time (1 error)	Outstanding Always uses proper spacing on all 9+ letters.
Letter Formation How well are students forming their letters correctly?	Weak Many errors in letter formation. Incorrect letter formations. (More than 5 errors.)	Poor Some errors in letter formation. Letters formed incorrectly. (4-5 errors)	Fair Few errors in letter formation. Few letters are formed incorrectly. (2-3 errors)	Good Most letters are formed correctly. (1 error)	Outstanding Consistently forms all letters correctly on all 9+ letters.
Readability How easy is it to read the students' writing?	Weak Many errors in readability. (More than 5 letters are difficult to read.)	Poor Some errors in readability. (All but 4-5 letters are legible.)	Fair Few errors in readability. (All but 2-3 letters are legible.)	Good Very easy to read. (All but 1 letter is legible.)	Outstanding Always easy to read. (All 9 letters are legible.)
Uniform Slant Is the slant of all letters uniform?	Weak Letter slant not consistent. (More than 5 letters exhibit slant errors.)	Poor Several consistency issues (All but 4-5 letters exhibit consistent slant.)	Fair Few consistency issues (All but 2-3 letters exhibit consistent slant.)	Good Most letter slant is consistent. (All but 1 letter exhibits consistent slant.)	Outstanding All letters uniform (All 9 letters exhibits consistent slant.)
