Summer Reading Project Scoring Rubric 
This rubric will be used to score Summer Reading Projects based on students' independent reading. The student grade will be a combination of their project and their knowledge of the book's characters and narrative elements.

Project demonstrates excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization with few or no errors.

Project demonstrates good spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization with some errors, but these errors do not affect the meaning of the essay.
Fair 2

Project demonstrates fair spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization with many errors that somewhat affect the meaning of the essay.
Poor 1

Project demonstrates poor spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization with an abundance of errors that interfere with the meaning of the essay.
Project Directions / Artwork

Excellent 4

Project does an excellent job adhering to directions. Student drew fantastic artwork and colored the drawing in fully or in a unique color scheme in an eye-catching way.
Good 3

Project does a good job adhering to the directions. Student drew original artwork and colored the drawing in to the best of their ability.
Fair 2

Project does a fair job adhering to the directions. Student drew and colored in the drawing but either copied the drawing or did not fully color it in.
Poor 1

Project does a poor job of adhering to the directions. Student's artwork seems rushed and not done to the best of their ability and/or the drawing is not colored in at all.
Neatness

Excellent 4

The final project is readable, clean, neat and attractive. It is highly visually appealing and looks like the author took great pride in it.
Good 3

The final project is readable, neat and attractive. It is visually appealing and looks like the author took some pride in it.
Fair 2

The final project is readable, and some parts are attractive. It is somewhat visually appealing and looks like parts of it might have been done in a hurry.
Poor 1

The final project is not neat or attractive. It lacks visual appeal and looks like the student just wanted to get it done and didn't care what it looked like.
