Microfiction Writing Micro Fiction Writing This rubric is used to assess short writing assignments throughout the school year, with different focuses. Rubric Code: L22CA6C By mmartynyshyn Ready to use Public Rubric Subject: English Type: Writing Grade Levels: 6-8

Micro Fiction A short story in 250 words or less.
	Needs Some Work 2 pts	Basics 3 pts	Good 4 pts	Excellent 5 pts
Mechanics Uses standard English mechanics.	Needs Some Work A great deal of spelling and/or punctuation errors that made reading the story difficult. Sentence construction is simple.	Basics Quite a few spelling and/or punctuation errors that distracted from the story. Sentence construction is repetitive.	Good A few spelling or/and punctuation errors that distracted only slightly from the story. Sentence construction shows effort to vary for interest.	Excellent Only one of two spelling and/or punctuation errors that did not distract from the story. Sentence construction shows effective use of different types.
Style: Imagery Uses strong nouns, adjectives, verbs that create vivid imagery to write a powerful story.	Needs Some Work Imagery is rarely used. Verbs aren't effective.	Basics Some imagery is present in story. Some attempt to choose strong nouns, adjectives and verbs.	Good Some use of strong imagery. Obvious attempt to use strong nouns and verbs most of the time.	Excellent Imagery helps place the reader right 'into' the story. Strong nouns, adjectives, verbs and vocabulary are present in each sentence.
Idea/Creativity Idea is original and uses creative language to grab the reader. A strong hook is included.	Needs Some Work The main idea was hard to find and the story lacked consistency.	Basics There was a main idea for the story, but it was unclear and inconsistent through out the story.	Good The idea for the story was creative and well thought out but inconsistent in parts of the story.	Excellent The idea for the story was creative, well thought out, and consistent throughout the story.
Strong Ending Leaves the reader wondering or is thought provoking.	Needs Some Work The story is lacking a strong ending line.	Basics The story's ending is weak, which greatly distracts from the overall story.	Good The story has an effective ending that adds to the overall effect of the story.	Excellent The story has a strong beginning, middle and the end "rings like a bell". The ending gives the reader a sense of satisfaction and leaves the reader something to think about.
