Letter Format	Poor The work is not a friendly letter. It does not follow the friendly letter form.	Fair The work is in the form of a letter, but the writer may not have used all five parts of the letter form.	Good All five parts of the friendly letter and are used correctly.	Excellent All five parts of the friendly letter are in place and used correctly.
Focus	Poor The writing does not focus on any particular topic, and it is hard to understand.	Fair The writer has not used details to make the events and relationship clear for the reader.	Good The letter conveys information to the reader, and some details are used.	Excellent The writer conveys information creatively and includes details that add interest and charm to the letter.
Character Connections	Poor The letter does not make sense based on the plot of the story and has little or no support.	Fair The letter makes some sense based on the plot of the story, a relationship is mentioned, and has little support.	Good The letter makes sense based on the plot of the story and the relationship of the characters is supported by at least 2 details / explanations.
