Main idea is clear	Poor Difficult to understand what the main idea of the paragraph is	Fair main idea is somewhat clear but there are some comments in the paragraph that may make the main idea unclear	Good Main idea is evident and clear
Clear topic sentence	Poor Main/Topic idea sentence is unclear and incorrectly placed, and may or may not be restated in the closing sentence.	Fair Main/Topic idea sentence is either unclear or incorrectly placed, and is restated in the closing sentence.	Good Main/Topic idea sentence is clear, correctly placed, and is restated in the closing sentence.
Supporting sentences	Poor Paragraph(s) have one or no supporting detail sentence that relate back to the main idea.	Fair Paragraph(s) have two supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.	Good Paragraph(s) have three or more supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.
Ideas are in order	Poor Ideas jump from one topic to another in an unorderly fashion that does not make sense	Fair Ideas are somewhat clear but need some clarification	Good Idea are in order that makes sense
Using linking words	Poor Very few linking words. ideas and topics do not flow	Fair Some linking words that allow the ideas to flow but not smoothly	Good Enough linking words for the paragraph to flow smoothly
strong concluding sentence	Poor You have no concluding sentence	Fair You have a concluding sentence that does not relate to the topic sentence or main idea of the paragraph	Good You have a strong concluding sentence that relates to the topic sentence and main idea of the paragraph. It also adds closure to the paragraph
Spelling, grammar, punctuation	Poor Paragraph has three or more punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors.	Fair Paragraph has one or two punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors.	Good Paragraph has no errors in punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
