Alphabet and Sounds	Limited understanding Recognizes some letters of the alphabet but does not know sounds of the letters, blends or digraphs.	Basic understanding Recognizes all letters of the alphabet, but knows some sounds. Recognizes some blends and/ordigraphs	Very good understandong Recognizes all letters of the alphabet and their respective sounds. Recognizes most blends and digraphs.	Thorough understanding Recognizes all letters of the alphabet and their respective sounds. Recognizes blends and digraphs and uses them to read new words.
Vowels and Consonant Sounds	Limited understanding Identifies alphabet but does not realize them as consonants or vowels.	Basic understanding Identifies consonants but cannot identify vowels.	Very good understandong Identifies both consonants and vowels, with their respective sounds.	Thorough understanding Identifies both consonants and vowels, with their respective sounds.
Vowel Differentiation	Limited understanding Cannot differentiate between long and short vowels sounds.	Basic understanding Recognizes long vowel sounds but not short sounds.
