	Exemplary 15 pts	Accomplished 10 pts	Novice 5 pts	Beginning 0 pts
Journal Entry	Exemplary Student makes clear their response to the topic chosen and stays on topic. When appropriate, student uses references to the reading or to outside sources.	Accomplished Student responds to the topic.	Novice Student does not respond to the topic in their answer.	Beginning No entries are submitted.
Entry Criteria	Exemplary Student answers each question of the writing prompt with 2 - 3 sentences.	Accomplished Student answers each question of the writing prompt with 1 -2 sentences or answers most questions with 2 - 3 sentences.	Novice Student answers some questions questions with 1 - 2 sentences.	Beginning Student does not answer the questions.
Response Entry	Exemplary Student makes clear their response to the teacher's journal entry. The response is respectful and relevant to the teacher's entry.	Accomplished Student responds respectfully to the teacher's journal entry.	Novice Student does not respond to another journal entry or is not respectful of a different viewpoint.	Beginning No responses are submitted.
Organization and Completion	Exemplary Student turns in complete journal with an entry for each week.	Accomplished Student turns in a partial journal that is missing no more than two entries.	Novice Student turns in an incomplete journal that is missing more than two entries.	Beginning No journal is submitted.
