Symphonic I Performance Test

Superior (Division I)	Tone Quality • Students perform with mature, characteristic sounds throughout the performance • Pitches are centered and focused. (20 - 25 pts)	Note Accuracy • Students perform with few or no missed notes. (15 - 20 pts)	Rythmic Accuracy & Stability • Students perform correct rhythms nearly or all of the time. • Students exhibit a high awareness of rhythmic stabilty. • Work with a metronome to help keep steady pulse is evident. (15 - 20 pts)	Musicianship • Students display a high awareness of phrasing and breath locations. • Dynamic contrast is obvious and effective. Students perform with proper support and little or no distortion. (8 - 10 pts)	Articulation & Style • Students perform all of the articulation markings on the page with only minor lapses. • Students perform all of the style markings on the page with distinct style differences with only minor lapses. (15 - 20 pts)	Evidence of Preparation • Students have obviously practiced the material and are prepared for the assessment. (4 - 5 pts)
Excellent (Division II)	Tone Quality • Students exhibit excellent mature, characteristic tone, but there are occasional flaws where students are unable to control and focus the sounds. (15 - 19 pts)	Note Accuracy • Students perform with some missed notes. (11 - 14 pts)	Rythmic Accuracy & Stability • Students perform correct rhythms most of the time. • Students exhibit an awareness of rhythmic stabilty. • Some work with a metronome to help keep steady pulse is evident. (11 - 14 pts)	Musicianship • Students display an awareness of phrasing and breath locations. • Dynamic contrasts are not always obvious and/or are performed with a lack of control. (6 - 7 pts)	Articulation & Style • Students perform most of the articulation markings on the page with minor lapses. • Students perform most of the style markings on the page with noticeable style differences with only minor lapses. (11 - 14 pts)	Evidence of Preparation • Students have practiced the material, but there are flaws or lapses present in the preparation. (3 pts)
Average (Division III)	Tone Quality • Students perform with a fundamental approach to good tone production but performers are often pushed beyond their ability to control tone quality. • Proper breath support is lacking at times. • Sounds are at times harsh, thin and/or pinched. (10 - 14 pts)	Note Accuracy • Students perform with several missed notes. (8 - 11 pts)	Rythmic Accuracy & Stability • Students perform correct rhythms some of the time. • Students exhibit low awareness of rhythmic stabilty. • Little work with a metronome to help keep steady pulse is evident. Pulse is not steady. (8 - 11 pts)	Musicianship • Students display a low awareness of phrasing and breath locations. • There is little use of dynamic contrast through out the selection. (4 - 5 pts)	Articulation & Style • Students perform most of the articulation markings on the page with minor lapses. • Students perform most of the style markings on the page with noticeable style differences with only minor lapses. (8 - 11 pts)	Evidence of Preparation • Students have practiced the material, but there are flaws or lapses present in the preparation. (2 pts)
Below Average (Division IV)	Tone Quality Students exhibit an immature approach to characteristic sound throughout most of the performance • Proper breath support is lacking at times. • Sounds are at times harsh, thin and/or pinched (5 - 9 pts)	Note Accuracy • Students perform with mostly missed notes. (4 - 7 pts)	Rythmic Accuracy & Stability • Students perform few correct rhythms. • Students exhibit very low awareness of rhythmic stabilty. • Very little work with a metronome to help keep steady pulse is evident. Pulse is not steady at all. (4 - 7 pts)	Musicianship • Students display a very little awareness of phrasing and breath locations. • There is little or no use of dynamic contrast. (2 - 3 pts)	Articulation & Style • Students perform some of the articulation markings on the page with many lapses. • Students perform some of the style markings on the page with very little style differences. (4 - 7 pts)	Evidence of Preparation • Students have practiced the material very little and are not adequately prepared for the assessment. (1 pt)
Poor (Division V)	Tone Quality • Students demonstrate poor characteristic tone quality and have little or no control or focus of their sound. (0 - 4 pts)	Note Accuracy • Students perform with nearly all missed notes. (0 - 3 pts)	Rythmic Accuracy & Stability • Students perform very few or no correct rhythms. • Students exhibit no awareness of rhythmic stabilty. • No work with a metronome to help keep steady pulse is evident. Pulse is not steady at all. Ryhthms are not recognizable. (0 - 3 pts)	Musicianship • Students display no awareness of phrasing and breath locations. • There is little or no evidence of attempts and dynamic contrast. (0 - 1 pts)	Articulation & Style • Students perform none of the articulation markings on the page. • Students perform none of the style markings on the page. (0 - 3 pts)	Evidence of Preparation • Students have practiced the material very little or not at all and are not prepared at all for the assessment. (0 pts)
