ORGANIZATION	Poor The main idea is not in the introductory paragraph. Evidence is unclear or unrelated to the ideas or purpose. It is difficult to identify different paragraphs because they are not organised clearly.	Good The idea is in the introductory paragraph. There are paragraphs but they are not well organised. Some ideas are not followed by evidence which is also somewhat unrelated to the idea.	Excellent The idea is in the introductory paragraph. Facts, examples, and details are organized in paragraphs creating good flow. Conclusion paragraph ends on good note.
VOICE/WORD CHOICE	Poor Many sentences are copied from a source instead of being the author's own words. Word choice is repetitive and overused.	Good The author mostly used his or her own words. There are good word choices with few repetitions. It would help to use more descriptive vocabulary.	Excellent The author used his or her own words and chose words to prevent repetition and create flow. Words are precise and descriptive.
SENTENCE FLUENCY	Poor Sentences are short, unclear, repetitive, and very choppy, or extremely long with little or no purpose.	Good The writing would benefit from greater sentence variety. The flow was choppy in areas.	Excellent There are a variety of sentences. Similar ideas are combined to create complex and compound sentences. There was a smooth flow throughout.
GRAMMAR	Poor There are so many mistakes that the essay is hard/impossible to understand.	Good There are a few mistakes, but they do not affect understanding.	Excellent There are no errors in grammar, capitalization, spelling or usage.
FORMATTING	Poor The final copy is messy. More than two formatting mistakes were made. There is no title page.	Good The final copy is legible but not very neat. Two formatting mistakes were made. A title page is present but is incomplete and/or uninteresting.	Excellent The final copy is neat. It is double-spaced. If typed, 12 pt. font is used. There is an attractive, appropriate title page which provides full information about the assignment and its author.
