Clear thesis is presented. Writing reflects understanding of prompt and reading

Poor

No clear thesis is presented. Writing reflects little to no understanding of prompt and/or reading selections. Writer summarizes not synthesizes.
Fair

Thesis is presented, but is vague or unclear. Writing reflects little or vague understanding of prompt and/or reading selections. Writer synthesizes some material, but relies on summary.
Good

Thesis is precise, creative, insightful, etc. Prompt is clearly understood and, consequently, demonstrates clear understanding of literature selection(s).
