Writing Poetry Rubric 
Used for grading poems written by students. Standard 6: Students read, write, and view texts to examine the choices artists make and to reflect on how their choices affect their audiences. Standard 1: Students use the writing process to produce clear responses to writing tasks that fulfill a variety of purposes and address a variety of audiences.

Most of the poems are creative, but some appear to be rushed. This is evident in the poet's redundancy, limited diction (choice of effect words), or use of cliches.

Poems are present, but they appear to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive, and ideas are unoriginal.

Very minor spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem. Punctuation is utilized when necessary. Overall, evidence that attention was spent on examples.
Approaching Standards

In some poems, the poet's intended meaning is confusing due to spelling and / or grammar errors. Punctuation may be misused. Basic editing not effectively completed.
Below Standards

There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poems difficult to understand. Punctuation is used incorrectly.
Poetic Devices

Exceeding Standards

Poems demonstrate a clear understanding and noted use of a variety of poetic devices (alliteration, assonance, consonance, metaphor, meter, onomatopoeia, personification, point of view, repetition, rhyme, simile, stanza, etc.).

Poems demonstrate a fair understanding and use of a variety of poetic devices (alliteration, assonance, consonance, metaphor, meter, onomatopoeia, personification, point of view, repetition, rhyme, simile, stanza, etc.).
Approaching Standards

Poems use limited poetic devices repetitively, but do not demonstrate a broad understanding of their use in poetry.
