Each of the three paragraphs begins with a central fact that states what's happening in the picture. It contains a subject and an opinion. Each paragraph ends with a final clincher that repeats the central fact. The writer has included details that support the central fact in between.

Central Fact

This is the first sentence of the paragraph. It contains a subject and an opinion. (in each paragraph)

The writer has written a central fact but it does not contain an opinion. It simply states a fact.
Proficient

The writer has written a central fact that contains both subject and an opinion. The writing is engaging to read.
Flashback

The writer should include some background information indicating how the character ended up in the current situation (only in the first paragraph).

Developing

The writer has included some flashback information but it does not relate or help build up to the central fact of the paragraph.

The writer has included excellent and interesting flashback information. It enhances the story and helps to move the reader toward the cental fact of the paragraph.
Character Traits

The writer includes character trait information. This reveals what kind of person his/her character is in the story. (can be in all three paragraphs)

Developing

The writer has included some some character trait information but it does not relate well to the central fact.
Proficient

The writer has included excellent and interesting character information. It enhances the story and helps ther reader understand or even relate to the character in the story.
Details and Commentary

Details in the paragraph support each central fact of each paragraph and help to move the reader through the story in a logical and organized manner (in all three paragraphs)

The writer did not include very many supportive details. Those that were written did not relate to the central fact. The writing is not focused and includes unrelated details. He/she does not yet understand this concept
Developing

The writer included some supportive details and commentary. They related somewhat to the central fact. May include some extraneous details not related to the central facts of the story.
Proficient

The writer included many supportive details and commentary. They related very well to the central facts. The writer full understands how to include supportive details and commentary.
Paragraph Clinchers

Each paragraph ends with a clincher that repeats or reflects the central fact. The last paragraph has the both paragraph clincher and final clincher. The final clincher repeats the title

Beginning

The writer did not include a paragraph clincher in any of the three paragraphs nor did he/she include a final clincher in the last paragraph.
Developing

The writer did attempt to write paragraph clinchers. The connection to the central fact is weak. The writer has some understanding of the relationship between central fact and clincher. The final clincher is missing or does not repeat the title of the story
Proficient

The writer wrote well-crafted paragraph clinchers in each of the three paragraphs. The connection to the central fact is very strong. The writer has an excellent understanding of the relationship between central fact and clincher. The final clincher is present in the final paragraph and repeats the title of the story.
