Writing Poetry
	Below Basic 20 pts	Basic 30 pts	Proficient 40 pts	Advanced 50 pts
Word Usage	Below Basic Student’s use of vocabulary is very basic .	Basic Student’s use of vocabulary is weak and the subject of the poem is unclear.	Proficient Student’s use of vocabulary is routine and workable for the subject of the poem.	Advanced Student’s use of vocabulary is precise, vivid, and paints a clear picture of the subject of the poem.
Form	Below Basic Poem is not written in the proper forms, ultimately diminishing the poetic value of the writer's collection.	Basic Poem is somewhat written in the proper form.	Proficient Poem is mostly written in the proper form.	Advanced Poem is complete and follows its intended form exactly.
Language Conventions Spelling, punctuation, grammar.	Below Basic There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poem difficult to understand. Puncutation is used incorrectly.	Basic The poet's intended meaning is muddled by several spelling or grammar errors. Punctuation may be misused.	Proficient A couple of spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem. Punctuation is utilized when necessary.	Advanced Proper use of modern English spelling and grammar is employed consistently throughout the poem. Punctuation is utilized when necessary.
Effort	Below Basic Student’s work lacks understanding of the assignment. Well below 6th grade expectations.	Basic Student’s work demonstrates some understanding of the assignment. Approaching 6th grade expectations.	Proficient Student’s work demonstrates an understanding of the assignment. Meets 6th grade expectations.	Advanced Student’s work demonstrates a complete understanding of the assignment and goes beyond the requirements. Exceeds 6th grade expectations.
Reading Ability to read the poem in its correct rhyme, rhythm or meter .	Below Basic Student was unable to read the poem to create rhyme, rhythm or meter	Basic Student was able to read the poem to create rhyme, rhythm or meter for less than half the poem.	Proficient Student reads the poem with the proper rhyme, rhythm or meter for most of the poem.	Advanced Student reads the poem with a sustained rhyme, rhythm or meter throughout the poem.
