Expository Essay Rubric Expository Essay Rubric Students will write an expository essay that is three to five pages long focusing on a particular major at a particular college or university. They will explain how to apply to the school, what classes you need to take for the degree, and what career options are open to someone with that degree. Expository Essay Rubric
	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts	Great 4 pts
Intro and Conclusion	Poor Does Not contain an intro or conclusion.	Fair Contains either an intro or a conclusion that introduces or extends the main idea, or contains both and neither relate to the main idea.	Good Contains both an intro and a conclusion and they do relate to the main idea, but are not fully developed.	Great Contains both an intro and a conclusion and they both relate to the main idea, and are both fully developed. (10% of grade)
Body Paragraphs	Poor Contains less than five body paragraphs, or more than one of the body paragraphs don't address the three main points of the prompt or do not include proof/information from the college.	Fair Contains less than five body paragraphs, or one of the body paragraphs doesn't address the main points of the prompt or do not include proof/information from the college.	Good Contains at least five body paragraphs, but some or all of the paragraphs don't address the main points of the prompt or do not include proof/information from the college.	Great Contains at least five body paragraphs, and all of the paragraphs address the points of the prompt, and include proof and information directly from the college. (10% of grade)
Grammar/ Effort	Poor The essay lacks editing and review. It has too many mistakes	Fair The essay has okay grammar.	Good The grammar in this essay is good.	Great The grammar is excellent. There are little to no mistakes. (10% of grade)
Effort/Creativity	Poor Essay is repetitive or shows a lack of effort in general.	Fair Essay lacks creativity or may be repetitive in places.	Good Essay shows some creativity and effort.	Great There is creativity in this essay and it shows real effort in research, word choice, and writing in general. (15 % of grade)
Length	Poor Essay does not meet length requirements and is more than 10 lines away from meeting them.	Fair Essay does not meet length requirements, but is within 10 lines of meeting them.	Good Essay does not meet length requirements, but is within five lines of meeting them.	Great Essay is three to five pages long, without unnecessary spacing added. (30% of grade)
