Into Thin Air: Character Analysis Essay
Character Analysis
Write an analytical expository essay informing your classmates about the character from whose perspective you wrote the journal. Explain the character's elements, which you have interpreted accurately from the text. Each element must be supported with evidence. A connection must be drawn between character elements and plot.

Interpretation is extended through brief elaboration and connected to plot, but the explanation is unclear and difficult to understand.
Basic
Interpretation is not extended beyond the explanation and support. A logical connection is made between character and plot, however, the explanation is brief and insufficient in order for the reader to fully understand the connection.
Learning Challenge
Interpretation is not extended beyond the explanation and support. No connection is made to plot, or connection does not follow logically from character interpretation.
Organization & GUMS
Master
Essay contains effective expository form discussed in class and contains at least three body paragraphs. There is a logical and well-thought-out organization of body paragraphs and sentences within them. There are few errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, or sentence structure.
Proficient
Essay contains most parts of expository form as covered in class, and three body paragraphs. There is little evidence that organization of paragraphs and sentences within them was well-thought-out. There are some errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, or sentence structure.
Basic
Essay contains ineffective expository introduction and conclusion, and three body paragraphs. There is little to no organization of body paragraphs or sentences within them. There are many errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, or sentence structure.
Learning Challenge
Essay may contain the minimum five paragraphs, but all are lacking the detail and effectiveness necessary to inform the reader and analyze the character. No prior organization is evident. The frequency of errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, or sentence structure inhibit understanding for the reader.
