Growth and Learning Writing Portfolio This rubric is designed to be used with 3rd and 4th grade students as they will create a learning and growth portfolio. I want the students to be more accountable for their learning and to be able to monitor their own progress throughout the year. 	Excellent 3 pts	Improving 2 pts	Needs More Effort 1 pts
Spelling	Excellent The majority of the words are spelled correctly on the response sheets.	Improving The majority of the words are phonemically correct and the student is recording all of the sounds he/she hears in a word.	Needs More Effort The majority of the words are spelled using some of the sounds heard in a word.
Capitalization and Punctuation	Excellent Student makes no errors in capitalization or punctuation. The response sheet is easy to read.	Improving Student makes some errors in capitalization and punctuation. The response sheet is somewhat difficult to read.	Needs More Effort The student has little or no regard for capitalization and punctuation. The response sheet is extremely difficult to read.
Penmanship	Excellent Handwriting is very legible and easy to read.	Improving Handwriting is somewhat legible, but the reader must exert a lot of effort to figure out some of the words.	Needs More Effort Handwriting is illegible. The reader is is unable to read most of the response sheet.
Organization	Excellent Student has neatly organized his/her portfolio.	Improving Student has neatly organized parts of his/her portfolio.	Needs More Effort Student has poorly organized his/her portfolio.
Response Sheets	Excellent Student clearly explains why the given piece was chosen for his/her portfolio and explains what he/she has learned.	Improving Student is somewhat clear on why the given piece was chosen for his/her portfolio and explains what he/she has learned.	Needs More Effort Student is vague on why the given piece was chosen for his/her portfolio and explains what he/she has learned.
Required Entries	Excellent Portfolio has all required response sheets and entries.	Improving Portfolio is missing one or two response sheets and/or entries.	Needs More Effort Portfolio is missing several response sheets and/or entries.
