No reference is made to literature or theory. Information included that does not support thesis in any way. No attempt made to be original or insightful. If facts are mentioned, student merely parrots the instructor’s lecture or an author’s position.

Explanations of concepts and/or theories are inaccurate or incomplete. Little attempt is made to tie in theory. There is a great deal of information that is not connected to the presentation thesis. Enough errors are made to distract a knowledgeable listener, but some information is accurate.

Good
Student may require occasional repetition of questions from the examiner, but this is rare.
Demonstrates knowledge of the topic by responding accurately and appropriately to the questions . At ease with answers to all questions but fails to elaborate.
Excellent
Student is able to comprehend and respond competently to all of the topic and question being discussed.
Demonstrates extensive knowledge of the topic by responding confidently, precisely and appropriately to all questions posed by the professor(s); able to successfully think or analyse “on one’s feet”/on the spot.

Some eye contact, but not maintained and at least half the time reads most of report/notes.

Speech is mostly smooth but with some hesitation and unevenness.
Student maintains eye contact most of the time but frequently returns to notes.
Excellent
Speech does not appear strained and is reasonably smooth and well-paced, using linking words and self-correction strategies where appropriate.
Maintains eye contact; seldom returning to notes; presentation/oral exam is like a planned conversation.

Only the simplest of grammatical structures are used, with frequent mistakes, for example with tenses. Communication is hindered as a result.

Student is able to use a variety of grammatical structures but sometimes makes mistakes.
Excellent
Good grasp of even fairly complex structures that have been previously learnt. Grammar mistakes are few and are often those that native speakers would make in conversation.
