Science Nonfiction Summary Rubric
	Proficient 4 pts	Developing 3 pts	Emerging 2 pts	Pre-Emerging 1 pts
Main Idea	Proficient States clear and concise main idea in own words.	Developing States main idea in own words but it is not clear and concise.	Emerging Writes the stated main idea directly from text.	Pre-Emerging Writes topic or detail, but missing main idea.
Vocabulary	Proficient X	Developing X	Emerging Applies higher level and content area vocabulary found in passage correctly in summary.	Pre-Emerging Does not demonstrate correct use of vocabulary found in passage.
Mechanics (Spelling and Grammar)	Proficient No spelling errors. Accurate punctuation and no grammar errors.	Developing High frequency words spelled correctly; no capitolization or errors; spacing is appropriate; legible handwriting	Emerging Some high frequency words spelled incorrectly; 1-2 capitolization and punctuation errors; handwriting is legible	Pre-Emerging Most high frequency words spelled incorrectly; 3 or more capitolization and punctuation errors; handwriting is not legible
