Studio Art Grading Rubric
	Emerging 1 pts	Competent 2 pts	Proficient 3 pts	Distinguished 4 pts
Description 25 %	Emerging Little description - uses one or no elements of art.	Competent Simple description that uses two or three elements of art. Does not include many details.	Proficient Uses many elements of art coherently and describes most of what is seen.	Distinguished In depth and eloquent visual inventory using most of the elements of art to create a clear description of the image.
Analysis 25 %	Emerging Analysis is sparse with little if any insight. No supporting elements and principles of design.	Competent Analysis is not fully developed; connections are not clear. Uses some elements and principles of design.	Proficient Analysis is generally sound but could make more specific connections. Uses many elements and principles of design.	Distinguished Specific and developed analysis that makes insightful observations and connections. Incorporates most elements and principles of design.
Interpretation 25 %	Emerging Little or no attempt to interpret artist's intent.	Competent Competent discussion lacking creativity and clear supporting visual evidence.	Proficient Clear, creative, but slightly tentative discussion of artist's intent partially supported by visual evidence.	Distinguished Clear, creative and confident discussion of artist's intent supported by detailed visual evidence.
Judgement 25 %	Emerging Does not judge aesthetic value of work.	Competent Uses little subjective and/or objective information to judge aesthetic value of work.	Proficient Uses some subjective and objective information to judge aesthetic value of work.	Distinguished Clear explanation of work's aesthetic value using both subjective and objective criteria.
