Using Transition Words in a Journal Entry Using Transition Words in a Paragraph Students will use a variety of transition words and phrases to convey sequence of time throughout any given day. Organization	Poor Paragraph is not in order. One or fewer transitional words were used.	Fair Some of the journal is in order. Used two transitional words, and one aspect of figurative language.	Great Most of journal is in order. No steps were forgotten. Used three or more transitional words, and used at least one aspect of figurative language.
Conventions	Poor Lots of errors in spelling and punctuation. Makes the text very difficult to read.	Fair Uses some spelling and punctuation correctly but there are distracting errors.	Great A few errors but most spelling and punctuation are correct. (2 or less)
Focus	Poor The writer does not stay on topic.	Fair The writing is somewhat clear but strays a bit off the topic.	Great The writer stays on topic all of the time.
