Does Not Meet Standard
to place the throwing-arm side of body away from the target, no step or same foot to the target, attempts to raise the arm at the elbow and no follow through or trunk rotation.
Needs Improvement
Demonstrates proper body stance, elbow is not at shoulder level, steps toward the target with the opposite foot, limited trunk rotation and no follow through.
Passing
Demonstrates and applies proper body stance, bends and raises the arm at the elbow, steps toward the target with the opposite foot, trunk rotates, and elbow is almost at 90 degrees, no weight shifts to front foot as ball is released.
Competent
Consistently demonstrates placing the throwing-arm side of the body away from the target, steps toward target w/the foot opposite the throwing hand, Weight on back foot at beginning of throw, Elbow at 90 degrees, Trunk rotates, Weight shifts to front foot as ball is released , Follow through is observed.
Hitting
Does Not Meet Standard
Attempts to stand with the left side of the body toward the pitcher, attempts to face the plate, only using arm movement no trunk rotation, eyes are not focus on the ball, and chopping at the ball.
Needs Improvement
Demonstrates proper body stance, dominate hand is on top, keeps bat off shoulder, majority of the time kept eye on ball, no hip or leg rotation, weight is on front foot the whole time, and swung downward or upward on the ball not horizontally.
Passing
Demonstrates and applies proper body stance, keeps hands together when gripping the bat, swings horizontally, attempts to hold the bat off of shoulder, eye on ball when swinging, limited lower body movement, hands stop while on follow through.
Competent
Consistently demonstrates proper body stance, dominate hand is on top and hands together, weight is on back leg, knees flexed , trunk uncoils shoulders then hips, keeps elbow away from body, eye is on ball, weight shifts from back to front foot, swing is level headed through the ball, and roll hands at wrist on follow through.
Fielding Grounders
Does Not Meet Standard
Attempts to be in ready position, limited movement to the ball, no bending at the knees, doesn’t watch the ball in, field the ball between the legs.
Needs Improvement
Demonstrates to move into the path of the ball, glove is down, watches the ball sometimes, feet are spread and butt slightly low.
Passing
Demonstrates and applies ready position, watches ball, moves towards ball but not forward, feet are spread out but not on balls of the feet or toes , butt is low, but not fielding out front the body.
Competent
Consistently demonstrates ready position, glove is down, keeps the head down and watches the ball move into the glove, weight is on balls of feet or toes, moves in line and forward toward the ball and bends forward, knee down, fingers spread, pinkies close together or crossed.
Base Running
Does Not Meet Standard
Attempts to run to the base and may overrun second or third base, no sliding, stealing or tagging up. Stays on the base no lead off. Doesn’t understand when to leave the base.
Needs Improvement
Runs to first base, tries to stay on base when the batter hits the ball, does not steal. Runs hard, but doesn’t know when to go or not to go, doesn’t slide or tag up.
Passing
Leads off, the runner touches every bag, and properly runs the bases, slides, steal but doesn’t tag up and has a wide turn on the bases.
Competent
Uses all the proper body mechanics involved in base running. Understand the proper way to run the bases. Knows the proper way to lead off, tag up, turn the bases, and slide correctly. Is able to decide when to steal and what the situation is at the moment to decide what to do and be ready.
