Thesis Statement

Specificity	+ The statement clearly identifies a single topic and position. The topic is narrow enough to be thoroughly addressed within the confines of the assignment.	v Topic is too broad to be addressed sufficiently within the confines of the assignment; may refer to multiple topics or problems, or may be unclear.	-- Topic and/or position is vague or unclear.
Stance	+ Statement clearly and convincingly reflects the writer's position on one topic. The position is supportable and original.	v Statement reflects the writer's position on the topic, but may be inadequate or unclear.	-- Statement lacks a position or stance, or may be unsupportable.
Significance	+ Thesis topic is relevant and important. It addresses a question or problem that requires resolution.	v The thesis statement may have some importance or relevance in the real world, but lacks immediacy and/or an original, supportable position.	-- Thesis statement has no real importance in the world. Reader may respond with, "So What?"
Structure	+ The statement is a well constructed, grammatically correct sentence; and includes some kind of hook to interest the reader.	v The statement is poorly constructed and/or contains one or two grammatical errors.	-- The statement contains more than two grammatical errors and/or is so poorly constructed that meaning is lost.
