Essay Contest Essay Contest This rubric is based on the guidelines for the 2008 UW-Oshkosh music essay contest with some aspects added for your grade in band class. Rubric Code: J7495X By sherryreetz Draft Public Rubric Subject: Music Type: Writing Grade Levels: 6-8

Music Essay Contest
	ZERO 0 pts	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts
Topic	ZERO STUDENT DID NOT HAND IN ESSAY!	Poor Student did not follow the topic guidelines and did not write about how he/she shares music.	Fair Student wrote about the correct topic most of the time but strayed from the topic at times.	Good Student wrote a focused essay about how he/she shares music and supports ideas with details.
Proper Heading	ZERO STUDENT DID NOT HAND IN ESSAY!	Poor Student has no name or heading on the assignment	Fair Student has some parts of the heading but not the heading that was instructed on the hand-out with the guidlines on it.	Good Student followed all directions on the Essay Guidelines hand-out and has proper heading on paper.
Spacing/Length	ZERO STUDENT DID NOT HAND IN ESSAY!	Poor Student's paper is not double spaced and does not have a whole page of writing as specified in the guidelines hand-out	Fair Student's essay is double spaced but is not an entire page, or student handed in a whole page but did not double space.	Good Student has essay double spaced and essay is the proper length of 1-3 pages.
Originality/Creativity	ZERO STUDENT DID NOT HAND IN ESSAY!	Poor Student's ideas are not original or creative. There is an evident lack of time put into this essay.	Fair Student uses creative ways to express how he/she shares music, but ideas aren't entirely original.	Good Student uses creative ways to express how he/she shares music and ideas are original and thought provoking.
Neatness	ZERO STUDENT DID NOT HAND IN ESSAY!	Poor Essay is ripped, wrinkled or hand written sloppily. Appearance is unacceptable.	Fair Essay is neatly hand written or typed. Appearance is acceptable but not perfect.	Good Student's essay is typed or neatly hand written and has not imperfections at all. Student took time and care in presentation of essay.
Deadline	ZERO STUDENT DID NOT HAND IN ESSAY!	Poor Essay was handed in over a week late.	Fair Essay was handed in late and finished during class time.	Good Essay was handed in on time and done on student's own time.
