Student usage of strategies to comprehend words in a story Strategies to comprehend words in a story When reading a story, students will use strategies to find the meaning of an unfamailar word without assistance from the teacher. The student demonstrates knowledge of and applies strategies to find meanings of unfamiliar words in a story.

Student demonstrates the ability to read a short story containing unfamiliar words.	Poor The student is not able to read a short story with unfamiliar words without assistance.	Fair The student is able to read a short story and figure out word meanings of unfamiliar words when given assistance.	Good The student reads a short story with unfamiliar words and demonstrates understanding of strategies for finding word meanings.
The student demonstrates an understanding of how to apply strategies to find the meanings of unknown words.	Poor The student does not recognize unfamiliar words and skips over them.	Fair The student acknowledges that he/she does not know the meaning of unfamiliar words and uses a strategy to find the meaning of the word with assistance.	Good The student acknowledges that he/she does not know the meaning of unfmiliar words and quickly apply strategies for successfully finding word meanings without assistance.
Student demonstrates undestanding of strategies by explaining what strategy was applied to determine the meaning of unknown words.	Poor The student can not explain and shows no evidence of how to use strategies to find unfamiliar word meanings with out assistance.	Fair The student can explain usage of at least one strategy to find meaning of unfamiliar words in a story with assistance from the teacher.	Good The student demonstrates an understanding of the strategies by explaining and applying more than one strategy to find the meanings of unfamiliar words in a story without assistance.
