Presentation of Significant Event
35 %

Excellent

Subject conveys a significant cultural influence in one's life and provides insight into the thoughts and ideas of the individuals involved
Fair

Subject conveys a cultural event and attempts to convey thoughts and ideas of those involved.
Poor

Subject does not convey the signficance of a cultural event or the story is not developed
Description, Detail, and Dialogue
20 %

Excellent

Description, detail, and dialogue enhance the event and help re-live the story.
Fair

Uses description, detail, and dialogue to re-tell the story.
Poor

Description, detail, and dialogue are very weak or non-existent; does not enhance the story.
Diction, Syntax, and Tone
15 %

Excellent

Sentence structure and word-choice are highly appropriate in terms of the intended audience and outcome; desired tone is achieved and has an impact on the reader.
Fair

Some attention and understanding of diction, syntax, and tone is apparent; there may be instances of "telling" and not "showing," but the overall feel of the piece is adequately conveyed.
Poor

Writer has given little or no attention to diction, syntax, nor tone; word-choice and sentence structure do not suggest desired effect and, therefore, the desired tone is not "felt" by reader.
Final Revision
20 %

Excellent

Final draft reflects careful thought and consideration of purpose, tone, audience, content, organization, introduction, and conclusion; all revision expectations have been met and the work is "polished."
Fair

Final draft reflects adequate, thoughtful revision and most expectations for a final draft have been met.
Poor

Final revision does not reflect the polished "feel" of most final drafts and is very rough in nature; in many cases, paragraph structure and development is weak; story is mostly a telling, rather than a "showing."
Language and Conventions
10 %

Excellent

Language use / vocabulary are sophisticated and conventions reflect very few errors, both in terms; this "polished feel" enhances the reader's enjoyment of the narrative.
Fair

Language use / vocabulary is acceptable and there are more than just a few errors in conventions (i.e., lots of spelling, punctuation, and/or usage problems); errors, however, do not interfere with reader's appreciation of the narrative.
Poor

Language use / vocabulary does not reflect revision nor does it reflect that of most 10th grade students; errors in convention are frequent and take away from the overall enjoyment of the narrative.
