Evidence is presented, which is scientifically sound. Evidence may be partially based on opinions or assumptions.

Evidence is not presented, which is scientifically sound. Evidence is based on opinions or assumptions.
Thinking/Knowledge
Excellent
The student is well informed and presents their evidence with confidence and understanding. If applicable, the student can easily answer questions / refute points posed by the other team.
Good
The student is informed and presents their evidence with understanding. If applicable, the student can answer questions / refute points posed by the other team.
Fair
The student is somewhat informed and presents their evidence with a degree of understanding. If applicable, the student struggles to answer questions / refute points posed by the other team.
Poor
The student is not informed and presents their evidence with little understanding. If applicable, the student is unable to answer questions / refute points posed by the other team.
Time Usage
Excellent
Student has used their time well in class and is clearly prepared for the debate. During the debate, the student maximizes their time, not going over or under the designated time.
Good
Student has used their time in class and is prepared for the debate. During the debate, the student uses their time, possibly going slightly over or under the designated time.
Fair
Student has used their time in class but may have been distracted/ing and is only somewhat prepared for the debate. During the debate, the student does not use time well and is either significantly over or under.
Poor
Student did not use their time in class well and/or is not prepared for the debate. During the debate, the student does not use time well and is either significantly over or under.
Professionalism
Excellent
Student presents their arguments in professional language, and demonstrates respect and good-sportsmanship.
Good
Student presents arguments with mostly professional language. Sportsmanship and respect are evident.
Fair
Some unprofessional language is used and/or respect and sportsmanship is sometimes evident.
Poor
Significant unprofessional language is used, sportsmanship and respect need improvement.
Eye Contact and Elocution
Excellent
Student maintains eye contact with audience or opponent, and seldom returning to notes. Student uses a clear voice and correct, precise pronunciation of terms so that all audience members can hear presentation.
Good
Student maintains eye contact most of the time but frequently returns to notes. Student's voice is clear. Student pronounces most words correctly. Most audience members can hear presentation.
Fair
Student occasionally uses eye contact, but still reads most of report. Student's voice is low. Student incorrectly pronounces terms. Audience members have difficulty hearing presentation.
Poor
Student reads all of report with no eye contact. Student mumbles, incorrectly pronounces terms, and speaks too quietly for students in the back of class to hear.
