ORGANIZATION

Exceeds/Meets Expectation

The writer has a discernible beginning, middle, and end. The events describing the incident are logically arranged.
Almost Meets Expectations

The required parts of the narrative are a little unorganized or off-track.
Fails to Meet Expectations

Necessary parts of the narrative are missing, and the sequence of events does not make sense.
IDEAS AND CONTENT

Exceeds/Meets Expectation

The beginning grabs the reader's attention and sets the scene. The writer describes an important experience that happened to them or someone they admire. The writer makes it easy for the reader to see the significance of this event by stating/alluding to the life lesson in their reflection.
Almost Meets Expectations

The narrative needs a better hook. The experience is mentioned but not described very well. The importance of the experience the writer chose doesn't come through as clearly as it should.
Fails to Meet Expectations

Not much happens. Few details are used. The narrative does not take shape.
VOICE

-Diction
-Syntax
-Imagery

Exceeds/Meets Expectation

A first-person narrator is used. The author's personality is apparent in the writing. The story abounds with sensory details that really re-create the experience for the reader. The writer uses a variety of sentence structures, which allow the paper's ideas to flow nicely.
Almost Meets Expectations

A consistent first person point of view is not always apparent. The writing could benefit from more personality. The writing could benefit from more descriptive language. Sentence structure is pretty basic, so the writing doesn't flow as well as it could.
Fails to Meet Expectations

The story is told from the wrong point of view and is missing a voice. Words are uninteresting or dull, unclear in meaning, and/or repeated often. Sentence structure is compromised by poor mechanics/grammar.
CONVENTIONS

Exceeds/Meets Expectation

It's apparent the writing was carefully proofread.
Almost Meets Expectations

More attentive proofreading should have been done.
Fails to Meet Expectations

Proofreading wasn't a priority, it seems.
