Introduction to Notan, the Japanese word for the concept between light and dark. Creating a black and white collage out of a black square and mounting it on white paper. Organic and geometric shapes - asymmetrical and symmetrical designs - balance.

Students skill level using x-acto knifes, scissors, drawing and gluing pieces.

Failed

Student only cut one shape per side. Cuts from x-acto knife and scissors are of poor quality. Did not glue any pieces onto white paper.
Needs Improvement

Student only cut a few shapes per side. Limited knowledge on how to use an x-acto knife. Some pieces are missing. Needed help using a ruler and centering a square on a piece of paper.

Student did not follow through with approved thumbnail design. Left the final project simple instead. Craftsmanship and skill need improvement. Jagged edges and tears from x-acto knife. Square is inaccurately centered on paper.
