Introduction	Inadequate Planning attempts to address prompt but with little or no success in establishing a focus. There is no hook to engage the reader and the thesis statement and strands are muddled and confusing.	Good Planning of the introduction includes some background information, thesis statement and thesis strands. There may not be a 'hook' to engage the reader and the thesis statement and strands may be slightly unclear.	Very Good Planning of the introduction is clear and focused. The 'hook' engages the reader and sets a context. Background information is useful. The thesis statement and thesis strands are clear and precise.
Body Paragraphs	Inadequate At least one topic statement does not support the relevant thesis statement. There is limited or no evidence of developing any ideas further.	Good Planning of the body paragraph includes evidence of a topic statement that supports the relevant thesis statement. There is some evidence of developing this idea further.	Very Good Planning of the body paragraph includes a relevant and interesting topic statement supporting the relevant thesis statement. There is evidence of good development of ideas to support essay writing.
Conclusion	Inadequate The conclusion is not attempted or is very weak. It does not include any personal comments or they do not relate to the main points/arguments made.
