Journal Entries	Exemplary Student makes clear their response to the topic chosen and stays on topic.	Average Student responds to the topic.	Emerging Student does not respond to the prompt or the readings in their answer.	Um... Student doesn't answer at all.
Response Entries	Exemplary Student makes clear their response to another students journal entry. The response is respectful and relevant to the other student's entry.	Average Student responds respectfully to another students journal entry	Emerging Student does not consistently respond to another student's entry or is not consistently respectful of a different viewpoint.	Um... Student does not acknowledge other students in terms of this journal.
Organization	Exemplary Student turns in complete journal in order with the earliest entry at the front and in chronological order	Average Student turns in journal but not in chronological order with their earliest entry at the front.	Emerging Student turns in an incomplete journal	Um... Student doesn't turn anything in.
Collaboration	Exemplary Student works with several students to get at depth within the readings, asks thoughtful questions and responds to teacher's questions and peer questions.	Average Student works with a few students. Asks some interesting questions. Doesn't always respond to entries.	Emerging Student rarely works with anyone. Does not respond to entries.	Um... Student ignores student/teacher entries and prompts.
Focus	Exemplary Student keeps all entries relevant to the readings and the prompts. Has clearly read the assigned texts and gets at "the meat" of the readings.	Average Student usually keeps entries relevant...sometimes goes off on non-related tangents. Doesn't always respond clearly to peers/teachers.	Emerging Student rarely writes about the assigned readings or prompts, and usually doodles or writes about something unrelated.	Um... Student doesn't write at all.
