Introduction	Incomplete does not state the question/topic, your position, and your plan for the essay and/or jumps right to the body of the essay	Average does state the question/topic, your position, and your plan for the essay, but is very weak and leaves the reader confused	Exceptional states the question/topic, your position, and your plan for the essay clearly and strongly, the reader is not confused about the topic and your position on the topic
Support	Incomplete The supporting points of the argument are not clear or related to the argument. There is little effort to connect the main topic to the larger theme of the writing.	Average The supporting points are clear and help the reader understand the topic better but, only minimally. Some details are provided and explained.	Exceptional All the supporting points are detailed and clearly relate to the topic or argument. The points are well presented and researched.
Conclusion	Incomplete No concluding paragraph - essay ends abruptly	Average Weak concluding paragraph - does not summarize or restate the thesis clearly	Exceptional Strong concluding paragraph - summarizes and restates the thesis in an interesting way that captures the reader's attention
